Observations Of a Half Cooked Football Fan

Soccer, is perhaps the only sport that acts as a melting pot of people across the globe. As a fan tottering on the threshold of soccer for the first time in my life, I made a few observations. If in case, I have overdone some or underplayed some, hard core soccer fans please excuse me and my naivety.

Here’s presenting a list of them as viewed from a naive pair of eyes:

1. When I was in my second year of college i.e a couple of years back, I observed that 99% of the college guys had only one topic to discuss in the corridors and in between classes: “Football.” At that point of time, it seemed to me as if they ate, drank, slept and breathed only about it. The names of Ronaldinho, Beckham and Rooney used to ricochet of the walls.

2. EPL: I started watching this somewhere around this time, last year and I ended up liking Man Utd. But one thing that I fail to understand is: when Man Utd plays against any team, why is it that only Cristiano Ronaldo gets fouled most of the time? Am I being stupid or is this something that really happens, I am confused. please clarify?

3. WAGS of fans, feel very in secured when their beloved’s matches are aired. This is a first hand experience, because many of my friends in college used to complain about the attention deficiency by the boys during the matches. I do not know how it is other places, but I think it should be along the same lines.

4. The match time officially is said to be 90 minutes, but it always crosses that. Why can’t anyone think and fix the extra and stoppage time beforehand? I am confused yet again?

5. The sport is perhaps the best said example of “to forgive and forget.” Fouls might be committed, but the second the referee blows the whistle, it ends there. No hard feelings; no rancour. Perhaps cricketers would learn a lesson or two.

6. Its an addiction. The more you see, the more get hooked and if one does not get the fix, its a prebodition of awaiting disaster.

7. Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea fans loathe each other on principle. Going to them and expressing the love for the sport, rather than the club, is equivalent to committing harakiri. Another thing learnt in my college and experienced, although not first hand.

8. Soccer World Cups are more classy than Cricket World Cups. Wonder why? When the ICC spends millions and millions on organising them?

9. People who are totally unaware of Football can talk about only Pele and Maradonna. Again first hand experience and frankly speaking, I myself was one a couple of years back.

10. Football players are immune to dust, cold, rain, heat and everything climatic. They have protective skin shields which others don’t have and also they are multi-climatic.

Theater review: ‘The Seafarer’

ent-seafarer1.JPG

It was a dark and stormy night &#8211 acheter viagra; no, please read on, even though you’ve heard that phrase before – when a stranger comes to the door of a scruffy house in Baldoyle, a place on the north side of Dublin, Ireland. The house is inhabited by a pair of bachelor brothers who have invited some friends over for a bit of Christmas cheer – think immeasurable amounts of alcohol. The stranger only wants to join in a game of cards, but the stakes he has in mind are much higher in Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s brilliantly philosophical yet wonderfully comical play, “The Seafarer, ” brought to pulsing life by Speakeasy Stage Company.Unlike the rest of the ensemble – their names are Ric, Sharky, Ivan and Nicky – the elegantly dressed stranger is introduced only as Mr. Lockhart. Before Mr. Lockhart arrives, the playwright sets up the master-slave relationship between the autocratic Ric, who has been blinded in a Halloween night binge when he fell into a dumpster, and his brother, Sharky, who has returned to care for him. Sharky has also lost his job as a chauffeur and has nowhere else to go.Ivan, a friend, has been thrown out by his wife. Nicky, who is keeping company with Sharky’s ex, arrives later with Mr. Lockhart, whom he has met in a bar.The pervading theme is alcohol – beer and stout, gin and whiskey – consumed in huge gulps and furtive swallows, the chief object of everyone’s desire. Life is viewed through an alcoholic haze, so profound that the passing of time, the loss of opportunity, and the absence of hope have no meaning. The life-force has been exchanged for alcohol. The perfectly realized set of a run-down cottage is designed by J. Michael Griggs and lighted by John R. Malinowski, who has visualized the dark shadows and spiritual insights of McPherson’s mysterious play. It evokes stage images reaching back to the beginning of the 20th century, when Irish playwrights began dramatizing the poignant stories of the lives of the peasants. McPherson captures the grandeur of their language and the superstitious beliefs imbedded in these men while keeping the viewers at the edge of their seats by building suspense for the outcome of the card game.It seems that Mr. Lockhart is the devil, and he has come to wager for Sharky’s soul, a debt contracted 25 years earlier. This combination of legend, Catholic apocrypha, and faith, although seeped in alcohol, is a trademark of McPherson’s talent, along with his remarkable skill as a storyteller.Guest director Carmel O’Reilly, former director of Sugan Theatre Company, has struck gold in establishing the milieu and the message just right, aided by a consummate ensemble of actors: Bob Colonna as Ric, Billy Meleady as the melancholy Sharky, Larry Coen in a splendidly subtle performance as Ivan, Ciaran Crawford as Nicky, and Derry Woodhouse as the volatile Mr. Lockhart. At the end, God’s protective might has been tested and mankind, in the body of this loser, Sharky, has been forgiven once more and saved. It’s a consoling theme for the holiday season. Ms. O’Reilly’s production, enhanced by a marvelous group of character actors, is an early holiday gift.THE SEAFARER Written by Conor McPherson and directed by Carmel O’Reilly. Produced by Speakeasy Stage Company at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, 527 Tremont St., Boston, through Dec. 13. Tickets, $30-$50, at 617-933-8600 or www.SpeakEasyStage.com.

Flyers-Thrashers Tonight: At Least It Can’t End in a Tie

ShermanI’m as big an anti-shootout fan the NHL has this side of Wyshynski, but for once, I’m really glad to be watching a game that will have a winner, regardless of whether it’s the team I’m pulling for.

After beating the Habs in Montreal last night, the Flyers get a matchup with the Thrashers at the Wach tonight. Antero Niittymaki will of course get the start, despite Marty Biron’s good play of late. For one, Marty started last night, but even if he hadn’t, Niitty effing owns the Thrashers. He’s 10-0 in 9 starts with a 1.51 GAA, drawing regular comparisons to a certain Civil War general.

The Flyers have been especially dominant in this matchup at home, winning eight of their last nine against the Thrashers in Philly, undefeated since 2005. They’ve fared well on the road too, including a recent game in Atlanta when Niitty and the Flyers won a 7-0 blowout in front of the national audience.

The Thrashers are hot right now though, winners of their last five. So will the Flyers’ domination of Atlanta continue, or will the Thrashers buck the trend and stay hot?

Air quality in los angeles

At least we can be sure one of those two things will happen.

Maker’s Notebook light mod build photos

lilyMark.jpg

I took my first stab at sewing the conductive thread from the Lilypad e-sewing kit into my Maker’s Notebook bookmark ribbon. I have gotten some great suggestions from readers on switches and wires and things, which I have yet to try. Currently, I’m just putting the coin battery into the battery holder to test out my sewing job. It works pretty well, and puts out enough light to scribble ideas late at night without disturbing anyone who’s sleeping. What’s this “sleep” they speak of, anyway?
