Bullet Proof Vest?
Monday, August 11th, 2008First of all, private ownership of handguns is legal in Canada. I am properly licensed to do so and am currently in the market for a pistol.
Second, I think that body armour is legal for civilian ownership and wear. However, wearing the stuff for a living, take my word for it, it’s a pain.
The Canadian Forces Fragmentation Vest is a good design. Without the plates (ceramic, not steel or titanium; ceramic is just a better material for the job), it will stop a pistol round. However against knives or rifles, you’d be SOL.
But they make good impact protection. Were it not for my frag vest, I would have broken a few ribs during an exercise when my vehicle hit some really nasty bumps and I slammed against the inside of the hatch. Repeatedly.
But it’s not the most comfortable thing to wear. It’s hot, it’s sweaty, doesn’t breathe well and it’s heavy. It makes a great windbreaker in its own right, and it does stop rain pretty well. However it does restrict your movement (that’s why most people I know remove the shoulder pads) and whenever you peel it off, you feel much, much lighter.
