residents say they worry forth safety issues at vermont yankeedavid p. greismanpicket staffbrattleboro the u.s. nuclear regulatory commission said the vermont yankee nuclear power plant operated safely in 2007, but disparate local residents say they are disturbed about whether the vernon, vt., plant will stay dependable in the future.government officials, members of the public, and representatives from entergy atomic the company that owns vermont yankee gathered monday eventide at the red roof inn in brattleboro to discuss the commission’s annual findings. the nrc, which spent 7,767 hours inspecting the facility in 2007, found that vermont yankee ran “in a manner that preserved illustrious health and safety,” according to a commission press rescue.vermont yankee received a designation of “green,” the top in a scale that runs from green to white to yellow to red, with each consecutive color meaning the plant has more significant safety issues and needs more government oversight. vermont yankee had previously been flagged for shipping a package with radioactively contaminated equipment to another shrub in pennsylvania in august 2006.the commission closed that case in october 2007 after finding that the power plant had taken appropriate corrective steps, according to the press release. the nrc did note in its findings seven instances of refuge issues from its inspections, all of which were categorized as posing the lowest threat to plant safe keeping. those findings included the august incident in which a wooden support structure collapsed, left a gaping orifice in the side of the plant’s cooling soar and released thousands of gallons of extravagantly from a broken pipe.when residents, including a behaviour of members the new england coalition, a nuclear watchdog group, got a unintentionally to speak, they brought up to commission members past incidents, the plant’s present condition and potential issues in the coming years. entergy is seeking to renew vermont yankee’s license, which expires in 2012, for an additional 20 years.”we are particular, very worried as a replacement for safety here,” said phyllis mandell of newfane, vt. “i’m not opposed to atomic energy. what i’m opposed to is an obsolete, decrepit place.” vermont yankee began operating in 1972.michael granger of newfane said he was worried about spent fuel stored on site in casks and its proximity to the connecticut river.”a repository for nuclear murder was promised when this plant was built, or there would be extensive reprocessing somewhere else that would publish the important less toxic,” granger said. “there is now no national repository, and we have 400-some-odd metric tons of nuclear worthless devastate or spent fuel rods. it seems to me we don’t separate what to do with this material except put it in bona fide and steel and plunk it near the river,” he said.granger asked the commission members whether the casks would survive a glide collapse.”the casks are intended to protect the fuel; these are very robust structures,” said james w. clifford, a deputy superintendent with the nrc.”i don’t think the country as a strong is brushing this aside. it is certainly a national enterprise,” he said. “there is a combination of actions the country has enchanted, part of which is the design of the casks, part of which is the certainty to make convinced that … an aircraft crashing into any industrial structure again does not occur.”commission members said they will take the public feedback into kindliness.
